Created on both the front and back of the same canvas, this work explores duality, perception, and the layered nature of identity. The two portraits do not oppose one another directly; instead, they exist as echoes across a shared surface, connected through gesture, texture, and emotional tension.

Benjamin Carbonne’s expressive brushwork allows the figures to appear unfinished, almost dissolving into darkness and light. One face emerges from deep shadow, intimate and introspective, while the other seems more exposed — fragile, silent, and suspended within space. Together, they create a dialogue between interior and exterior presence, memory and perception, concealment and revelation.

The physical structure of the work itself becomes essential to its meaning. By painting both sides, the artist transforms the canvas into a threshold rather than a flat image — suggesting that no identity can ever be entirely seen from a single point of view.
